Professional Standards

As one of the most highly qualified financial planning firms in the UK we often take our high levels of professional achievement for granted. However, we are regularly reminded that not everyone understands the various levels of professional qualifications applicable to financial advice.

At Forty Two we are proud to give our clients in Glasgow and London access to a professional financial planner who holds both the internationally recognised CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER cm professional qualification and the UK Chartered Financial Planner title. Very few Independent Financial Advisers (IFA) hold both designations.

We would always encourage you to carry out some due diligence before selecting an independent financial adviser or financial planner to ensure they are suitably qualified to provide the advice you require.

The following pages will tell you a little bit more about each qualification.

A WORD OF WARNING

Consumers are often left confused by the "alphabet soup" of letters used to describe adviser qualifiaction.

The CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER cm title has been accredited as a Level 6 qualification (degree). Only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER cm is legally allowed to be abveviated to CFP.

However, the bare minimum entry level qualification, the Certificate in Financial Planning, is often referred to by the abreviation CFP. The Certificate in Financial Planning is a Level 3 qualification (roughly equivalent to Highers or A Levels).

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) which regulates financial advice in the UK has decided that the current minimum qualification levels are insufficient to adequately protect consumers and will raise the minimum standard to Level 4 (diploma) from the end of 2012.
